Sondra Faye: What's it like growing up Metal in France?
ERYN NON DAE:
Like anywhere else I guess… Through magazines, webzines, radios and associations which help bands and collectives play in big cities where bands professionally organize themselves in associations. You can easily be touring in France. Big cities are quite close to one another.
Sondra Faye: You recorded your last EP "THE NEVER ENDING WHIRL OF CONFUSION" at ConKrete Studio in Bordeaux, France; which musical instruments did you use in the recording?
ERYN NON DAE:
For the Drums, we used a 12 year old ( !) Pearl Session, one large bass drum with double pedals. The guitars are all Drop 6 AES820 and Ty Taibor models Yamahas. Rivera+MesaBoogie hamp heads and MesaBoogie beams. The Bass is a BTB active Ibanez using an old SVT3 ampeg with a classic 4$10 speaker, added to that a great POD mix, A lot of microphone mixed with direct and the whole tripled !!!
Sondra Faye: Where are you recording your current EP that is set to release this June?
ERYN NON DAE:
The album was recorded in the same place where we did the EP : in Bordeaux. A southern City in France which is 220 kilometers Ouest from Toulouse, where we all are. Mobo was in control of the recording.
Sondra Faye: Which band member decides on the names of your songs and your EP's?
ERYN NON DAE:
The singer of course but he always makes sure to share his idea and ask for our opinon first. Most of the time he finds it right away but at times we gude him towards another choice.
Sondra Faye: If an American MetalHead went to Toulouse, what clubs there play live Metal music?
ERYN NON DAE:
Big bands usually end up in one unique place which is called « Le Zenith » where you can see bands like Korn, Iron Maiden etc. Then there is « Le Bikini » which is THE métal venue of the City. All bands played there : Sepultura, Machine Head, fear Factory and plenty other ones. Finally, you can find middle size venues where local and regional bands can play. And obviously many « café-concerts » which are specific bars offering concerts.
Sondra Faye: What French metal bands would you say influenced the members of your band?
ERYN NON DAE:
Hmm… None.. . Sorry ! For real. We actually all grew up with the sound mainly coming from the US or Northern Europe, which is the case especially for the singer and Bass player.
Sondra Faye: Is the "Enigma of the Unknown" a trick question?
ERYN NON DAE:
( !) No, Not at all ! Even if I have to admit that Math (singer) is rather reluctant at the idea of justifying his lyrics (laughs). He doesn’t like to unveil his words ! (laughs) The song actually speaks about personal enlightenment, about how man could easily gain more wisdom if he were to open himself to empathy and broader mind.
Sondra Faye: What is The Metal Academy of the national radio Le Mouv’ , and can it be heard on the internet?
ERYN NON DAE:
It is just a radio station that is presented by two guys but which is aired in the entire country.
So, when you are aired there and nominated « album of the week », it is a great opportunity ! Many people used to listen to this radio station. I am saying ‘used to’ because actually, unfortunately, the specific broadcast was shut down a few months ago. It is only going on on the internet.
Sondra Faye: Will you be filming videos for your new EP in France?
ERYN NON DAE:
Yes, we are working on it at the moment. We have chosen « The decline and the fall ». I can only say that it is going to be… very special. Nothing to do with all the videos we are used to see. Then, thanks to Metal Blade, that video will get a chance to travel out there in the rest of the world… so we hope.
Sondra Faye: Thank you so much for this interview! I hope to see your band playing the US of A soon!
ERYN NON DAE:
Thank you for having come to us and let us meet, hopefully, in the US for a live performance… We might be going there by the end of the year… ! Wait and see… Hope for the best !!!
